Information on Oral Pathology

What is an oral pathologist?

An oral pathologist is a specialist in dentistry and pathology specifically trained to interpret tissue samples (biopsies) of the mouth, jaws and skin of the face. Since oral pathologists are first trained as dentists, they are experts on the specific diseases and conditions that affect the mouth and oral region and work closely with dentist and other specialists.

How do oral pathologists impact my health care?

The role of the oral pathologist is critical in accurately diagnosing your oral condition, although this is a doctor that you will probably never actually meet. It is important that your doctor sends your biopsy to an experienced oral pathologist that they trust. Since the mouth and jaws are unique, early and accurate recognition, diagnosis and treatment are necessary to prevent potentially serious consequences.

Dr. Belknap, Dr.  Montague and Dr. DeVilliers at Dynamic Pathology are board certified oral pathologists, experts in diagnosing oral diseases and disorders.

Billing Policy

Patients are billed directly for our oral pathology laboratory services and medical or dental insurance claims are filed directly with insurance as a courtesy to you. The fee for our laboratory services is separate from the charge from your doctor’s office for the biopsy procedure. We are considered out of network providers with all health insurance plans and we have opted-out of Medicare, effective April 1, 2023. In order to file insurance claims for pathology services, you need to provide copies of your driver’s license or identification card and insurance card to your doctor’s office to be submitted to our lab with your biopsy.
